What does the Total IgE Test measure?

Total IgE measures the overall level of immunoglobulin E — an antibody class produced by the immune system in response to allergens and parasites. Elevated total IgE suggests an atopic (allergic) constitution, though specific allergen identification requires separate specific IgE testing.

Why does it matter?

Total IgE is a useful first step when someone has symptoms of allergic disease (hay fever, eczema, asthma, hives, food reactions) but is unsure whether allergy is the cause. A markedly elevated result supports allergic disease and prompts further specific testing (dust mite, pollen, pet dander, food panels).

Who should get this test?

  • People with chronic sneezing, runny nose, or nasal congestion
  • Anyone with eczema, recurring hives, or unexplained skin rashes
  • Those with asthma or respiratory symptoms worsening in certain environments
  • Anyone with suspected food allergies
