Lipoprotein(a) — Lp(a) Test at Home in Srinagar
An inherited cardiovascular risk factor that diet and statins cannot change.
What does the Lp(a) Test measure?
Lipoprotein(a), written as Lp(a) or 'LP little a', is a type of LDL particle with an additional protein called apolipoprotein(a) attached. This makes it especially sticky and prone to depositing in artery walls. Lp(a) levels are almost entirely determined by genetics — unlike regular LDL, they do not respond much to diet, exercise, or standard statins.
Why does it matter?
Elevated Lp(a) (typically above 50 mg/dL or 125 nmol/L) significantly raises the risk of heart attack, stroke, and aortic valve disease — independent of all other risk factors. Up to 20% of the global population carries high Lp(a) without knowing it. You only need to test it once in your life because it barely changes. If elevated, your doctor can adjust overall cardiovascular risk management accordingly.
Who should get this test?
- Anyone with a family history of heart attacks before age 55 (men) or 65 (women)
- People who have already had a heart attack or stroke despite normal cholesterol
- Young adults doing a baseline cardiovascular risk panel
- Anyone whose parent or sibling has been told they have high Lp(a)
- Patients being evaluated before starting cholesterol-lowering therapy
