Every year, around the time the chinar leaves start turning, my phone starts ringing with the same few questions. "Sister, is Influvac available?" "What is the Influvac injection price in Kashmir?" "Can you come home and give it to my father, he can't sit in a clinic queue?" I'm a registered nurse in Srinagar, and I give more flu shots in October and November than in the rest of the year combined. So I've put everything I tell families on the phone into one place.
If you are trying to decide whether to get the Influvac flu vaccine this winter, where to buy it, what you should pay, or whether you can get it done at home in Srinagar, this should answer it.
Last December I was called to a house in Rajbagh. The grandmother had been down with flu for a week, then her grandson caught it, then his mother. Three generations in one house, all in bed at the same time, in Chillai Kalan. When I asked, nobody in the family had taken the flu shot. The next October, the same family called me in the first week. I vaccinated all six of them in the living room in about forty minutes.
What is Influvac, in plain words?
Influvac is a flu vaccine made by Abbott. It's an inactivated vaccine, which means it contains no live virus at all, only purified surface proteins of the influenza virus. Your immune system learns to recognise those proteins, so when the real flu comes around it can fight back faster.
You'll usually see it in pharmacies as Influvac Tetra, the four-strain (quadrivalent) version. It covers two influenza A strains and two influenza B strains. In 2024 the WHO stopped recommending one of the B strains (B/Yamagata) because it has not been seen circulating since 2020. Because of that, manufacturers worldwide are moving to three-strain (trivalent) versions. So depending on the season and the batch, you may see either version. Both are fine. What matters is that it is this season's vaccine.
It comes as a single pre-filled syringe of 0.5 ml and is given as an injection into the muscle, usually the upper arm for adults.
Influvac injection price in Kashmir: what you should actually pay
This is the question I get asked most, so here is the honest answer: there is no single price for Influvac in Kashmir.
The MRP is printed on the carton, and it can change from one season's batch to the next. But what you actually pay depends on who you buy it from:
Some chemists charge the full MRP. That's common at smaller shops, and during peak season when stock runs short.
Some give a small discount, maybe a few percent off, especially if you're a regular customer.
Some give a decent discount, usually larger distributors, or when you're buying for the whole family.
So if someone in Srinagar quotes you a price, don't assume it's the only price. Ask around.
To know our current rate for Influvac, just call us on 7006300321. We'll tell you the price of the vaccine on its own, and the price if you want us to come home and give it. We'll also tell you if we're offering a family rate that week. No pressure, just ask.
Where you buy it | Typical pricing | What to watch out for |
|---|---|---|
Small neighbourhood chemist | Often full MRP | Check expiry date and that the box was stored in a fridge |
Larger pharmacy / distributor | Mild to decent discount | Stock can run out in November, so buy early |
Clinic or hospital | Vaccine price plus a consultation or administration fee | Queues and waiting-room exposure in peak flu season |
Kashmir Health Collective (home visit) | Call 7006300321 for current rates | Nurse brings the vaccine cold-chained and gives it at home |
One tip from experience: the cheapest vial is not a bargain if it wasn't kept cold. Flu vaccines have to stay between 2°C and 8°C the whole time. A syringe that spent an afternoon on a warm shop counter, or in a car on the way home, may not protect you properly, and you'll never know it just by looking at it.
Influvac injection at home in Srinagar
Most of my Influvac calls are for home vaccination, and it makes sense. The people who need the flu shot most are elderly parents, people with diabetes or heart or lung problems, and pregnant women. They are also the people you least want sitting in a crowded clinic in November next to someone coughing.
Here's how a home visit works with us:
You call or WhatsApp us on 7006300321. Tell us how many people and their ages, and mention any major health conditions or allergies.
We confirm the rate and a time slot. Same-day visits are often possible, and weekends too.
A registered nurse comes to your home with the vaccine in a proper cold box, so it's never out of the 2–8°C range.
Quick screening: fever today? Any allergic reaction to a vaccine before? Pregnant? On blood thinners? These take two minutes and matter.
The injection itself takes a few seconds. For children, we use the thigh or arm depending on age.
We stay for about 15 minutes afterwards to watch for any immediate reaction. This is standard practice, and it's the step people skip when they get a pharmacy to "just put it in".
You get a record with the vaccine name, batch number and date, which is useful for next year and for your doctor.
We cover most of Srinagar, including Rajbagh, Jawahar Nagar, Gogji Bagh, Hyderpora, Bemina, Sanat Nagar, Peerbagh, Rawalpora, Nowgam, Karan Nagar, Soura, Nishat, Hazratbal, Lal Chowk and the areas around them. For Budgam, Ganderbal, Pulwama and other districts, call and ask. We often can, especially for a family or group booking.
If you already bought the vaccine yourself and just want someone to give it safely at home, we do that too. Just keep it in the fridge (not the freezer) until the nurse arrives.
Who should take the Influvac flu vaccine?
The simple answer is that almost everyone aged 6 months and above can benefit. But in Kashmir, I'd strongly push for it in these groups:
Anyone over 60–65. Flu in older people often turns into pneumonia, and our winters make it worse.
People with diabetes, heart disease, high BP with complications, kidney disease, asthma or COPD. Flu can knock sugars and breathing badly out of control.
Pregnant women, at any stage of pregnancy. It protects the mother, and the antibodies pass to the baby, who can't be vaccinated until 6 months.
Children from 6 months to 5 years, especially if they go to school or daycare, which is where flu spreads fastest.
People caring for a newborn, an elderly parent, or someone bedridden. You're protecting them by protecting yourself.
Healthcare workers, teachers, shopkeepers, and anyone who meets a lot of people in winter.
People on long-term steroids, chemotherapy, or with weakened immunity. Check with your doctor about timing.
When is the best time to get Influvac in Kashmir?
In Kashmir the main flu season runs through our winter, roughly December to March, with the worst stretch usually during Chillai Kalan. The body needs about two weeks after the injection to build protection. So the sweet spot is:
October to mid-November, which is ideal.
December or even January is still worth it. Late is better than never, because flu keeps circulating until spring.
And yes, you need it every year. The flu virus changes, the vaccine is updated every season to match, and the protection from last year's shot fades within months.
Dose and schedule
Age group | Dose | How many doses |
|---|---|---|
Adults and children 9 years and above | 0.5 ml | One dose, every year |
Children 6 months to 8 years, never had a flu shot before | 0.5 ml | Two doses, at least 4 weeks apart, in the first year |
Children 6 months to 8 years, vaccinated in a previous season | 0.5 ml | One dose, every year |
Babies under 6 months | Not given. Protect them by vaccinating the mother during pregnancy and everyone at home. | |
If your child needs the second dose, just tell us when you book the first one. We'll remind you and come back four weeks later.
Side effects: what's normal and what isn't
Most people feel nothing more than a sore arm. The common, harmless ones:
Pain, redness or a little swelling where the injection went in
Mild body ache, tiredness or headache for a day or so
A slight temperature, more common in children
These usually settle within 1–2 days. A cold compress on the arm and paracetamol if needed is usually all it takes.
Call a doctor straight away if there's swelling of the face or lips, difficulty breathing, a widespread rash, or dizziness soon after the shot. Serious allergic reactions are rare, and they almost always show up within minutes. That's exactly why we wait with you for 15 minutes after the injection.
"Will the flu shot give me flu?" No. Influvac has no live virus in it, so it can't. If someone gets a cold the week after, it's usually because they picked up one of the many other winter viruses, or they caught flu before the vaccine had time to work.
Who should not take it, or should wait
Anyone who had a severe allergic reaction to a previous flu vaccine, or to any ingredient in it, should not take it.
If you have a high fever or are acutely unwell today, wait until you recover. A mild cold or runny nose is not a reason to postpone.
Anyone who developed Guillain-Barré syndrome within 6 weeks of a previous flu shot should discuss it with their doctor first.
People on blood thinners or with bleeding disorders can usually still take it. Just tell the nurse, and we'll press on the site a bit longer.
Egg allergy: Influvac is made using eggs and may contain tiny traces of egg protein. Current international guidance says people with egg allergy can still receive flu vaccines. But if you've had a severe reaction to eggs, tell us first so it can be given with a doctor's approval.
Frequently asked questions about Influvac
What is the price of Influvac injection in Srinagar?
It varies. Some chemists sell at full MRP, some give a small discount, and some give a decent discount. For our current rate, both the vaccine alone and with a home visit, call 7006300321.
Is Influvac available in Srinagar right now?
Stock usually arrives in autumn and can get short by late November. Call us and we'll tell you whether we have the current season's batch in hand.
Can I get the Influvac injection at home in Srinagar?
Yes. A registered nurse will come to your home with the vaccine kept cold, give the injection, and wait 15 minutes to make sure you're fine. Call 7006300321 to book.
Do I need a prescription for Influvac?
Vaccines are prescription medicines in India. If you don't have one, we can help arrange a quick consultation through our doctor home visit service.
Is Influvac Tetra better than other flu vaccines?
All WHO-matched, licensed flu vaccines work in broadly the same way. Brands like Influvac, Vaxigrip, and Fluarix are all used widely. The most important thing is getting this season's vaccine, from a properly refrigerated source, on time.
How long does Influvac protection last?
It builds up over about two weeks, then protects you through the season, roughly 6 months or so. That's why it's taken every year.
How effective is the flu vaccine?
It won't stop every infection. In a well-matched year it cuts the chance of getting flu by around half. More importantly, it greatly reduces the chance of a severe illness, pneumonia or a hospital stay, especially in older people.
Can I take Influvac during pregnancy?
Yes. Flu vaccination is recommended in any trimester of pregnancy and is also safe while breastfeeding. Let us know you're pregnant when you book.
Can I take Influvac with the COVID or pneumonia vaccine?
Yes, inactivated flu vaccines can be given on the same day as other vaccines, in different arms. Many older patients take the pneumococcal vaccine along with it. Check with your doctor on which ones you need.
Can a diabetic person take Influvac?
Yes, and they should. People with diabetes get sicker from flu and their sugars can go haywire. The vaccine does not affect blood sugar.
Can I take it if I have a cold?
A mild cold without fever is fine. With a fever, wait until you're better.
Can I shower or go to work after the injection?
Yes. There are no restrictions. Just don't rub the injection site hard.
I bought Influvac from a chemist. Can you come and just inject it?
Yes. Keep it in the fridge's main compartment (not the freezer and not the door) and we'll give it at home.
Can you vaccinate my whole family in one visit?
Yes, and it's the most common booking we get. Tell us how many people when you call, and ask about family rates.
My honest advice
I've nursed a lot of people through bad winters in this valley. Flu isn't just "a bad cold" when you're 72, or diabetic, or seven months pregnant, and I've seen it land people in SKIMS who were perfectly fine the week before. The shot takes a few seconds, costs less than a couple of days of lost work, and you can have it done without leaving your house.
That family in Rajbagh I mentioned? The following winter, one of the grandchildren got flu from school. Nobody else in the house did.
