Folate / Folic Acid (Vitamin B9) Test at Home in Srinagar
Critical for DNA synthesis, neural tube development, and red blood cell production.
What does the Folate Test measure?
A folate blood test measures the level of folate (folic acid / vitamin B9) in the serum or red blood cells. Folate is essential for DNA synthesis, cell division, and — critically — the development of the fetal neural tube in early pregnancy.
Why does it matter?
Folate deficiency causes megaloblastic anaemia and elevated homocysteine. In pregnant women, it dramatically increases the risk of neural tube defects (spina bifida, anencephaly) in the developing baby. Unlike B12, folate is not stored long in the body and depletes within weeks of inadequate intake.
Who should get this test?
- Women planning pregnancy or in the first 12 weeks
- People with megaloblastic anaemia being investigated
- Vegetarians and those with poor dietary variety
- Patients on methotrexate, phenytoin, or other folate-antagonist drugs
