Vitamin B12 (Cobalamin) Test at Home in Srinagar
Critical for nerves and red blood cells — and commonly deficient in vegetarians.
What does the Vitamin B12 Test measure?
A vitamin B12 blood test measures the level of cobalamin in your serum. B12 is essential for producing red blood cells, maintaining the myelin sheath around nerves, and synthesising DNA. Unlike most vitamins, B12 is found almost exclusively in animal products.
Why does it matter?
B12 deficiency is extremely common in South Asia, particularly among vegetarians who get no B12 from plant foods. It causes megaloblastic anaemia, irreversible nerve damage, cognitive decline, and elevated homocysteine. Many patients remain deficient for years without a diagnosis because symptoms develop slowly.
Who should get this test?
- Vegetarians and vegans (B12 occurs only in animal products)
- The elderly — reduced stomach acid impairs B12 absorption
- People on metformin (long-term use blocks B12 absorption)
- Anyone with fatigue, tingling in hands/feet, or memory concerns
