What does the Cortisol Test measure?

A cortisol blood test measures the level of cortisol — the body's primary stress hormone, produced by the adrenal glands. Cortisol follows a diurnal rhythm: it peaks in the early morning (around 7–8am) and falls through the day to its lowest around midnight.

Why does it matter?

Abnormal cortisol patterns affect energy, sleep, immune function, metabolism, and mental health. Chronically elevated cortisol is associated with Cushing's syndrome, weight gain, hypertension, and diabetes. Very low cortisol indicates adrenal insufficiency (Addison's disease) — a potentially serious condition if undetected.

Who should get this test?

  • People with unexplained weight gain around the abdomen and face
  • Those with severe fatigue, low blood pressure, or salt cravings
  • People experiencing prolonged burnout or high-stress periods
  • Anyone suspected of Cushing's or Addison's disease
