Prolactin Test at Home in Srinagar
Elevated prolactin disrupts periods and fertility in women, and testosterone in men.
What does the Prolactin Test measure?
Prolactin is a hormone produced by the pituitary gland, primarily responsible for stimulating breast milk production after childbirth. In non-pregnant, non-breastfeeding people, prolactin levels are normally very low.
Why does it matter?
Elevated prolactin (hyperprolactinaemia) inhibits the hormonal cascade governing ovulation and testosterone production. In women this causes irregular or absent periods, infertility, and sometimes spontaneous breast milk production. In men it causes reduced libido and erectile dysfunction. The most common cause is a benign pituitary tumour (prolactinoma) that is highly treatable with medication.
Who should get this test?
- Women with irregular periods, absent periods, or unexplained infertility
- Women with spontaneous breast milk production outside pregnancy
- Men with unexplained low libido or erectile dysfunction
- Anyone with visual disturbance or persistent headaches (possible pituitary cause)
