What does the Testosterone Test measure?

A total testosterone blood test measures the overall concentration of testosterone in the blood — including both the free (active) fraction and the protein-bound fraction. It is the primary male sex hormone and is also present in smaller amounts in women.

Why does it matter?

In men, low testosterone (hypogonadism) causes fatigue, reduced libido, loss of muscle mass, depression, and erectile dysfunction. Testosterone levels decline naturally with age but can also fall due to obesity, stress, poor sleep, or medical conditions. In women, high testosterone (hyperandrogenism) is associated with PCOS, hair loss, acne, and irregular periods.

Who should get this test?

  • Men with low energy, reduced libido, or loss of muscle mass
  • Men over 40 doing a routine hormone check
  • Women with irregular periods, excess facial hair, or suspected PCOS
  • Athletes concerned about hormone levels
