What does the Vitamin D Test measure?

The 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25-OH Vitamin D) blood test measures the level of vitamin D in your blood. Vitamin D is produced in the skin on exposure to UVB sunlight and is also obtained from certain foods and supplements. It plays key roles in calcium absorption, bone health, immune regulation, mood, and muscle function.

Why does it matter?

Kashmir's geography — high altitude, cold winters, and significant time spent indoors — makes vitamin D deficiency extremely common. Studies in J&K populations consistently find deficiency rates above 70%. Low vitamin D is linked to bone loss, frequent infections, fatigue, depression, and increased cardiovascular and metabolic risk.

Who should get this test?

  • Anyone spending most of the day indoors, especially in winter
  • People with joint pain, bone aches, or frequent fractures
  • Those with depression, low mood, or seasonal energy dips
  • Vegetarians and vegans with low dietary intake of D3
  • Anyone supplementing vitamin D and wanting to verify their levels
